Announcement: Advanced Aquarist PDF Issues Are Back!
We know you've been missing them so they are back! The PDFs (located at http://www.advancedaquarist.com/pdf/ and from the PDF link in our header) are now up-to-date as of the October 2009 issue and the November issue will be posted in the next day or two. We would love to read your comments about the PDFs so that we can make them better for you, so please sound off in the comments below this post when you are finished reading.
One thing you may notice is that the PDFs are now available for purchase as $0.99 downloads from March 2009 forward. Since the PDFs prior to this date were free downloads (and these are still free and located at http://www.advancedaquarist.com/pdf/free/), we thought we should take a minute to explain the alteration.
When Advanced Aquarist's Online Magazine started our PDF project back in November 2007, we informed our readers the PDFs would be free for at least a year, after which we would reassess our options on how we might continue delivering them to the public (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2007/11/aa-announcement#h3). Over the course of 2008, the PDFs were very well received by our readers, and we were extremely pleased that we could service a niche that others were not. Unfortunately, the PDF project lapsed in early 2009 as I had a career change that took me away from working on Advanced Aquarist as much as I was previously able to. During that time period, we heard repeated requests to bring the PDFs back. A career opportunity surfaced for me in late 2009, which afforded me additional time in my schedule to dedicate back to Advanced Aquarist. After discussing our options, our staff decided to move forward with a pay-for-download option for the PDFs (primarily to offset the expense of proprietary software licensing and the additional time and resources required to publish and distribute the PDFs – it’s expensive and time consuming to do what we do!).
We understand that this is a change for you and that it will take a bit of time to get used to the new format. We hope that people understand our reasoning behind the change, and we hope that our readers would consider purchasing the monthly PDFs as a way of showing your support for a website that has consistently brought you free, high quality reefkeeping information every month since January 2002 – longer than any other online reefkeeping magazine. $0.99 per downloadable issue is inexpensive – especially considering the professionally designed PDFs we plan to continue to publish every month. We have never set up a “pay wall” on the website in order to read any of our content, nor do we charge for basic features such as the ability to search the website. We are able to do this because of our sponsors and advertisers; We’ve greatly appreciated their support over the eight years as I’m sure you have.
The Internet is a fast-changing medium, and we want to continue to innovate for everyone’s benefit. Your support goes a long way toward this goal. We seek to publish our magazine many years from now, bringing you professional information that will make you a more informed and successful reefkeeper. We continue to push the envelope to better serve you, our readers. Please show your financial support by purchasing our PDFs and annual books, as well as supporting our sponsors; It is these things that make Advanced Aquarist possible. Rest assured, unlike other websites past and present, every dollar you spend with us goes directly to buying and publishing quality articles from professional writers.
For those reefkeeping communities that are interested, we will be offering an Advanced Aquarist Affiliate Program. If you are interested in becoming an Affiliate, please feel free to email me for more information.
