Crazy beautiful new tetra species

By Leonard Ho - Posted Sep 30, 2016 09:00 AM
Hyphessobrycon margitae is a newest described tetra species, and it is one of the most dazzling ever. H.margitae has an intensely bright blue body with radiant red fringes on all its fins. It's as if a sapphire and ruby had a love child.

Hyphessobrycon margitae is found from the río Nanay drainage in Peru.  Like many newly described fish species, this tetra has already made its way into the aquarium trade, sometimes referred to simply as the aptly named Red-Blue Peru Tetra.

The new species is now formally described in the latest publication of Vertebrate Zoology (German).
