The Birth of Weedy Seadragon

Congratulations to SeaWorld Orlando on the rare birth of one of their weedy seadragons! This is the first such successful hatching at any SeaWorld facility and only the fourth ever in the United States. We have a video of the rare event.

The female weedy seadargon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) laid close to 100 eggs in June 2012, depositing them on the spongy underside of the male's tail; As with seahorses, the males carry the eggs to term.  This week, the first eggs began to hatch!
