What is RSS?
RSS news feeds (which stands for Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary depending on whom you ask) are a way for us to allow you to subscribe to specific sections of our website and be notified when updates occur in these areas. Various places you might find these news feed icons in our website are website News and our Reefs in the News article.
If you want to see a listing of each article that has just been published, our Latest Published Articles feed is the one you will want to subscribe to in your news aggregator. This feed will update monthly and will show each article that has just been published on the website. No more subscribing to mailing lists. :)
By subscribing to our News
section with your news reader, you can be
kept up-to-date on the latest things happening here. This would
include notification of special information regarding updates to the website. This keeps you up-to-date on anything
new we add to areas you want to keep abreast of without receiving
emails from us. However, if you
would prefer to receive email notifications from us instead, please
subscribe to our website newsletter by sending an email to reefs-newsletter@reefs.org.
By subscribing to our Reefs in the News article with your news aggregator, you will receive anywhere from 1-6 interesting links per day that link to published news articles that deal with various marine topics.
For more information on RSS, please see this URL: http://www.whatisrss.com/
Where are these news feeds located?
Latest Published Articles: On the Magazine Issue Table of Contents:

Website News: In the Syndication box:
Reefs in the News: On the Reefs in the News Section:
And links are also available in the footer of every page:
How do I use these news feeds?
In order to use these news feeds, you need a news feed aggregator /
reader. There are many available and a list can be found here.
These news readers range from web-based, to PDA's, email-based,
platform independent, and platform dependent options. Ones we
might suggest are:
Web-based:
Platform Independent Programs:
- Mozilla Firefox (web browser)
- Mozilla Thunderbird (email client)
There are other platform specific clients and they can be found in the above link.
What will happen is that your news aggregator will check our
website at
regular intervals for any updates to our news feeds. If it sees
an update, it will display that update in your news reader and you will
be able to click on the link and be taken to that new addition to our
website. It's a very simple and very powerful way to keep abreast
of what's going on without having to submit your email address or any personal information.
Add our News Feed to your Website
There are many websites
on the web that will allow you to submit our RSS feed URL and
subsequently generate a tiny snippit of javascript that you can add to
your website to display our news feeds. The following RSS feeds
are available:
- http://www.advancedaquarist.com/marinenews/RSS (Reefs in the News Links)
- http://www.advancedaquarist.com/sitenews/RSS (Website Updates -- new issues, announcements, etc)
Submit either of these URL's to the services and they will generate the javascript code snippit for you.
