Entire Asian Arowana genome sequenced

Scientists have finished decoding the genome of Scleropages formosus. There's a reason why Asian arowanas look so prehistoric. It turns out they're the most primitive of the modern (ray-finned) fishes sequenced thus far.

The genome study concluded that the appearance of S.formosus likely hasn't changed for millions upon millions of years.  The authors (controversially) conclude that Asian arowana lineage even predates eels, which several recent studies have suggested are the oldest extant modern fish.

The research team hopes to apply the new genetic understanding to help improve arowana aquaculture.  S.formosus remains a critically endangered species in the wild.

The study is published in the journal Genome Biology and Evolution.
