Baby fish mimics flatworm

A flatworm or nudibrach? Nope! This is a baby sole fish.

Life Imitating Art Imitating Life

On the northwest coast of Bali, Indonesia, our good friends at blennywatcher.com shot video of one of nature’s great mimicry acts: A tiny, thumbnail-sized juvenile sole (Soleichthys maculosus) masquerading as a colorful (and toxic) polyclad flatworm.

Tell us that wasn’t one of the coolest things you’ve ever seen!  Learn more at blennywatcher.com.  Our thanks to Ned and Anna and the entire blennywatcher team for sharing this information and for their talented work exploring and documenting tropical sea life.

Thaumoctopus mimicus, eat your heart out!
