Cairns Underwater Film Festival hosts 2011 Photography Contest

Not to be outdone by the Philippine’s Department of Tourism, Cairns (Australia) is attracting underwater photographers to their reefs.  The submitted underwater photos must have been taken within the last two years in the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea waters.

According to Cairns Underwater Film Festival:

This year the Cairns Underwater Film Festival will once again also host a photo competition.  Full details will be released soon.

There are 6 categories to enter:

  • Wide Angle Nature – Celebrating the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea
  • Young Photographer – An opportunity for the under 16′s to show off their best underwater photos
  • Macro – Celebrating the little guys.
  • Diver(s) – Divers in harmony with the reef
  • Compact – Best shot taken on a compact camera system; and
  • Creative – An open category to let your imagination go wild (photoshop manipulation allowed).

Additionally a prize will be awarded to the image judged as ‘Best In Show’.

A major prize will be awarded to the winner of each category.

Deadline for Entry is 16th July 2011.

Finalists will be notified on Saturday 6th August 2011

Winners will be announced at the Cairns Underwater Film Festival on the 13th August 2011

Images will be judged by PNG diving pioneer Bob Halstead, underwater and nature photographer Jurgen Freund, and underwater photographer Xanthe Rivett.
