Hyphessobrycon margitae is found from the río Nanay drainage in Peru.  Like many newly described fish species, this tetra has already made its way into the aquarium trade, sometimes referred to simply as the aptly named Red-Blue Peru Tetra.

The new species is now formally described in the latest publication of Vertebrate Zoology (German).
