Palau to establish massive marine reserve

Palau is one of my favorite places in the world. It's an unique coral reef island chain both above and below sea level. Yesterday, Palau's Congress approved a bill to protect 80% of their reefs. It is unquestionably a national, nay world treasure worth preserving.

The new marine reserve covers an area of 193,000 square miles (500,000 square kilometers), which makes it the world's fifth largest fully protected marine reserve.  Palau's President Tommy Remengesau, Jr. has declared he will sign the bill into law next week.  The next big challenge for Palau's government will be figuring out how to enforce conservation because the nation has no active military.
