Revisitng "Jaubert Method" reefkeeping

This French reef is an example of a successful, lush reef aquarium that does not use some variant of the Berlin Method.

Long-time reefkeepers have likely heard of the Jaubert (AKA Monaco AKA plenum) method, but few have attempted setting up this type of aquarium.  Quite honestly, the “Berlin Method” (live rock + protein skimmer) is the most common type of reefkeeping methodology for a reason: It simply works really well.  But for anyone looking to expand their reefkeeping experience, consider revisiting other methodologies like the Jaubert method.  Done right, plenum systems can work very well as the video below proves.

For those unfamiliar with the Jaubert method (or if you’re in need of a refresher course), read this classic Advanced Aquarist article by Julian Sprung.

This French reefkeeper describes his system:

The aquarium has been running for 2 years using the Jaubert method:
– No protein skimmer
10 cm of sand on a 1 cm plenum
About 25 kg of live rock
ATI 6x54W T5 lighting
tunze 6025
RAH tunze for maintaining calcium and alkalinity
Cryptic refugium
7x mini mangroves (naturally lit)
– Few water changes
