RIP Granddad the Lungfish

Granddad (Shedd Aquarium)

The gentle, prehistoric Queensland lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) can live upwards of 100 years, growing up to five feet and weighing as much as 100 lbs.  At an estimated 90+ years old, Granddad was likely the longest living aquarium fish ever under the great care at Shedd. The aquarium estimates over 100 million people have visited Granddad during his 80+ year tenure at the aquarium.

As reported by the Associated Press:

“Granddad lived a pretty relaxed life, enjoyed interactions with us, including gentle pats along his back, and loved to eat his leafy greens,” said Michelle Sattler, who was Granddad’s caretaker for more than 30 years.

Our thoughts are with the Michelle and the aquarium staff.  Any aquarist will attest to how painful it is to lose a fish under our care.  I can only imagine how it feels to lose one I had been caring for it for over three decades.
